Wilmington – Motorists on I-495 experienced intermittent lane closures for several hours today due to a crash that resulted in cattle on the highway.

The crash occurred at 1:48 p.m. as Patrick Scholten, 23, of Inwood, Iowa, drove a 2003 Peterbilt tractor trailer on the ramp from I-495 northbound to Terminal Avenue. The trailer contained approximately forty-two cattle. As the truck traveled along a curve in the ramp it overturned onto its driver’s side, with both the tractor and livestock trailer landing on the guardrail.

As a result of the crash, approximately three cattle escaped from the trailer and walked onto and along I-495. Responding Troopers and others on scene were able to corral the escaped cattle and remove them from the highway.

A representative from the U.S. Department of Agriculture responded to the scene to monitor the care of the cattle and their removal from the overturned trailer.

Scholten, who was not injured, was issued a traffic summons for inattentive driving. Troopers remain on scene as the crash is cleared.
