A man from the Newark area has been arrested in connection with the stabbing a University of Delaware quarterback, thanks, in part, surveillance cameras in the city.
On Monday, Newark Police obtained an arrest warrant for Michael J. Creed, 25, of Dixie Line Road, charging him with Assault 1st Degree and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony. Creed is in police custody. No bail information is available.
At 1:20 a.m. on May 12, officers were called the City of Newark Parking Lot #1,at 54 East Delaware Avenue (behind Grotto Pizza) for a report of a stabbing.
The victim, a 22 year old University of Delaware student, was transported to Christiana Hospital by private vehicle, prior to police arrival. The victim underwent surgery and is currently listed in stable condition.
With the use of surveillance cameras in the area, detectives were able to obtain information on a vehicle that the suspect had been associated with before the altercation. Police also learned that the suspect was yelling at a group of people in the parking lot that included the victim.
The victim approached the suspect who was seen leaning into a car and then coming out. The victim grabbed the suspect by the shoulder and the suspect reportedly made punching motions in the direction of the victim. The suspect then ran away and the victim noticed that he had been stabbed.
The News Journal, citing sources close to the football team, identified the victim as University of Delaware quarterback Trevor Sasek of Limerick, Pa. University of Delaware officials, citing policy, did not identify the victim. Victims in such cases are not identified by police.
Sasek is a fith year player who is competing for a spot on the team.
