PetSmart Charities, SPCA team up on discount neutering

The Delaware Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the oldest and most experienced animal welfare organization in the state, today announced it will offer $20 spay/neuter surgeries for puppies and kittens under six months of age in partnership with PetSmart Charities this June. The surgeries will be available at both of its shelters in Stanton and Georgetown.

“Kittens as young as four months and puppies as young as five can go into heat and become pregnant,” said Chris Motoyoshi, development director,  Delaware SPCA. “It’s these accidental litters that end up in animal shelters with no place to call home. Access to safe and affordable spay/neuter services can help make a difference in preventing unwanted animal births.”

PetSmart Charities’ national program – named the “Did You Know? Campaign” – seeks to educate pet owners and the public about how prevalent pregnancy is among young animals. While some pet owners may worry that their pet is too young for this procedure, spaying and neutering is safe and easy for kittens and puppies as young as 10 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Many owners put off the procedure and wait until the puppy or kitten is six to eight months old,” says Motoyoshi. “By then, it can be too late – a litter of puppies or kittens can be born.”

This special rate is lower than Delaware SPCA’s usual low-cost services and is available to all residents of the State of Delaware.  Pet owners who wish to take advantage of this offer must mention the “Did You Know?” promotion when they call to schedule their appointment.  Space is limited.  Puppies must weigh five pounds, male kittens must weigh two pounds, and female kittens must weight three pounds.

Based on funds from the PetSmart Charities grant, Delaware SPCA will provide 100 puppy and kitten sterilizations for $20 during June.
