Delaware Futures will honor Chip Rossi, Delaware Market President for Bank of America, and NaTeka Shelton, 2006 Delaware Futures Graduate, at the annual Haskell/Wyeth Awards Ceremony on April 18 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge, 1400 Delmarva Lane, Wilmington. Honorary chair is June Peterson.

Rossi leads Bank of America’s civic and philanthropic efforts for Delaware and reaffirmed the bank’s emphasis on education with the donation of one of the bank’s building, which resulted in the creation of the Community Education Building.

Delaware Futures is a non-profit organization that works with disadvantaged youth to strengthen their skills and broaden their horizons through academic tutoring, internship and learning, counseling, and community service activities. The group says the bank’s commitment to education includes grants and Bank of America employees who mentor young people throughout the state, including teaching financial literacy.

“Bank of America’s leadership through their donation of a building to be used by charter schools, coupled with Chip’s dedication to education of our future generations, show both of their commitment to improving education in Delaware,” said Alan Levin, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office. “Knowing Chip, I can honestly say there is no one more deserving of this prestigious award.”

The Haskell/Wyeth Award evolved when Andrew Wyeth gave Delaware Futures founder Hal Haskell an original sketch and granted permission to reproduce “the Haskell/Wyeth sketch” for the purpose of honoring deserving Delaware Futures supporters and/or individuals from organizations with similar missions.

The award reads: “This award is for meeting the challenge of motivating young people to overcome every obstacle to become leaders in bringing harmony, hope, and love to every human being.”

The Alumni Recognition Award recipient is 2006 Delaware Futures graduate NaTeka Shelton. NaTeka recently received her Doctor in Pharmacology from Hampton University.

Since 2007, 100% of Delaware Futures’ graduating classes have been accepted to college and overall 172 of its 179 graduates go on to college, with the remaining 7 joining the military.

Proceeds from the event enable Delaware Futures to continue preparing Delaware’s disadvantaged youth for college.
