AARP, SBA team up on info sessions for older entrepreneurs

The US  Small Business Administration and AARP  have two additional Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day events in Delaware this month. The events are targeted to prospective and current second career-small business owner and provide information on technical assistance and financing resources.

Presenters are SBA, AARP,  SCORE Delaware, YWCA-Delaware Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship and the  Small Business Technology and Development Center. The first event was held Friday in Dover.

Information on the two events is as follows:

New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, 12 Penns Way, New Castle, Friday,  April 12, 8:30 a.m., noon; Friday, April 19,  9:30 a.m. – 1  p.m.,  Sussex County Association of Realtors, 23407 Park Avenue, Georgetown. National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day is part of a larger effort by SBA and AARP to promote entrepreneurship among individuals ages 50 and older.

With one in four individuals ages 44 to 70 interested in becoming entrepreneurs, and 63 percent of Americans planning to work during retirement, small business ownership is being seen as an option.

Small business owners with long-term counselors reporter greater sales, hire more workers and reporter a longer lifespan for their enterprise.

SBA and AARP will provide the training and mentoring services older entrepreneurs need to successfully start and grow businesses and create jobs, according to a release.
