Will the Democrats tie the score or will the Republicans hold on to the lead? Find out at the 8th annual “Democrats vs. Republicans” volleyball match – an event to raise awareness and dollars for Easter Seals services for people with disabilities. This rematch will take place at the CAI / Easter Seals Volleyball Challenge on Saturday, March 9th, at a new location, the Delaware Orthopaedic Sportsplex at 326 Ruthar Drive in Newark. The game follows the opening ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. The Republicans are up: four to three.

Expected guests include: U.S. Senator Tom Carper, Congressman John Carney, Lt. Governor Matt Denn, Attorney General Beau Biden, Democrat Team Co-captains, House Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst and Speaker of the House Pete Schwartzkopf and Republican Team Captains, Sen. Greg Lavelle and Rep. Michael Ramone. Others scheduled to participate (as of 3/5) include: Sens. Nicole Poore, Bryan Townsend, Reps. Paul Baumbach, John Viola, Quinn Johnson, Earl Jaques, Mike Mulrooney, Ed Osienski, Charles Paradee, Darryl Scott, and DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara for the Democrats. Joining Lavelle and Ramone for the Republicans are:Reps. Tim Dukes, Ron Gray, Debbie Hudson, Jeff Spiegelman, Dave Wilson, former Senator Charlie Copeland, former Assistant U.S. Attorney Ferris Wharton, and former Rep. and New Castle County Council President Tom Kovach.

The Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders will cheer on the teams. Radio stations and event sponsors WSTW/WDEL will broadcast live Saturday morning. Follow the action on Facebook (www.facebook.com/VolleyballChallenge), and Twitter @esdelvb and use #esvbc2013 for everything related to the event.

Now in its 32nd year, the Volleyball Challenge raises funds to help Easter Seals provide critically needed services for children and adults with disabilities in the region. CAI, a leading information technology consulting and outsourcing organization, is Title Sponsor for the ninth year. Last year, the Volleyball Challenge raised more than $367,000 for Easter Seals services. Since 2001, more than $3.1 million has been raised. This year’s fundraising goal is $350,000.

The CAI / Easter Seals Volleyball Challenge spans a three-day period from Friday evening, March 8th, through Sunday, March 10th. Teams consist of 6 to 10 players who play in a 90-minute rotation. Prizes will be awarded for the top individual and team fundraisers. There will be moon bounces for the kids in the Discover Bank Kids Zone, fabulous raffles and more! Also on hand will be the 2013 Easter Seals Volleyball Ambassador and Newark residents, Jon Guzzi, and his family.
