The two airlines are expected to announce a merger on Thursday that if  approved by regulators would create the largest airline in the world.

Both airlines serve Philadelphia International Airport, although American has only a limited schedule from PHL.

US Airways had doggedly pursued the merger as American worked to emerge from Chapter 11 bankrtuptcy proceedings.

The merger could mark the end of a wave of  large carriers swallowing up one another.
