Newark Police announced the launch of a Facebook page. The addition of this page will allow the Newark Police Department to continue the posting of news releases, crime notices, community notifications and safety tips to the public.
The Newark Police Department will monitor the Facebook page but users should not use the page to report crime. To report criminal activity users should utilize 911 or the Department’s non emergency number, 366-7111, according to a release.
Facebook pages have been popular with the public, led by the Delaware State Police, which now have more than 10,000 “likes” or fans. New Castle County and Wilmington Police have Facebook pages that are frequently updated.
Another factor contributing to the popularity has been the use of paywalls by news media that limit the number of page views of police and other news. Currently only the News Journal has erected a paywall on a local basis.
