The Greene Turtle will open its first northern Delaware restaurant on Elkton Road on the day after Christmas.
The location is becoming an extension of Main Street early next year as retail and apartment development extends south of Main Street. The original Main Street has few retail vacancies, with the exception of the Newark Shopping Center.
The newest Greene Turtle will be located in Rittenhouse Station, a mixed use project on the former site of a family owned auto dealership of the same name.
Greene Turtle, which got its start in Ocean City, Md. in the 1970s, has more than 30 locations that include Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, Del. The location closest to the new Newark restaurant is in Aberdeen, Md. Future locations are planned in New York state and White Marsh Mall east of Baltimore.
The Greene Turtle operates as a sports bar and grill, but also caters to families. FSR Magazine reported earlier this year that the chain has undergone a rebranding effort, with more menu items catering to women and people with lighter appetites.
