UD hockey player charged with theft after altercation over lost sweatshirt

Newark Police arrested a University of Delaware hockey player on theft charges after an altercation with a man said to be wearing his sweatshirt.  He was  identified as Kevin J. Rice, 22, of North Wales Pa.. Rice was arrested for robbery 2nd following an early morning incident on Oct. 28 on East Main Street.

At around 2:14 a.m. a male University of Delaware student, 22, was walking on the sidewalk in the 100 block of East Main Street. The man was wearing a UD ice hockey sweatshirt displaying the number 10.

Rice, who wears the number 10, had a sweatshirt that went missing a year earlier. Police said Rice was in a vehicle on East Main Street when he saw the man wearing the sweatshirt. He left the vehicle, confronted the victim and attempted to remove the sweatshirt.

An altercation between the two was broken up by two male acquaintances with Rice. Rice then entered into a vehicle and left the area with his two acquaintances. The victim discovered after the altercation that his cell phone was missing.

Using computer software, officers were able to track the location of the phone which led them to the area of Harmony Road and Route 273 where they found Rice in a vehicle. Rice was taken into custody without incident and found to be in possession of the victim’s cell phone, police reported.

The victim sustained facial swelling but declined medical treatment. Rice was released on $5,000 bond.
