The Kenny Family Shoprite stores will team up with the Food Bank of Delaware to get food to those in need before goods end up in landfills.
The stores signed up with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Food Recovery Challenge. The Food Recovery Challenge asks participants to reduce as much of their food waste as possible.
    – saving money, helping communities and protecting the environment.
Stores have “pull dates” that require expired items to go to the landfill and getting products out of the store before that  date saves on disposal costs and helps those in need.

As Food Recovery Challenge participants, the Food Bank of Delaware will begin making weekly pickups to ShopRite’s five New Castle County stores. Donated foods will include fresh meats, produce and bakery items. Thanks to this new partnership, fresh, nutritious foods will be diverted from local landfills to the tables of those who need it most.
Further details will be announced on Thursday.
The Food Bank of Delaware distributes between seven and 10 million pounds of food and grocery products each year through its network of 508 hunger-relief program partners throughout the state and also provides thousands of meals a month for children through the After-School Feeding Program, the Summer Food Service Program and the Backpack Program.
The Food Bank is based near Newark.
