Updated: Newport-area store owner stabbed to death during robbery

The 57-year-old owner of a Newport convenience store was died of knife wounds inflicted during a robbery Friday night.

Delaware State Police  identified the victim as Hemantkumar Maganlal Chauhan, of Newport.

Troopers reported the crime occurred at 7:15 p.m. when a man, armed with a knife entered the Penn Bantam Market at 418 Newport Gap Pike.

The suspect vaulted over the sales counter and confronted the owner of the market and demanded money. A struggle took place, with the suspect stabbing the victim in the chest with the knife. The suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash northbound on Newport Gap Pike.

The victim was later pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital.

Homicide Detectives continue their investigation by conducting interviews, reviewing video surveillance, and collecting evidence at the scene.
