Lavelle, Lopez GOP bright spots in Senate

The three Democrats were heavy favorites in a state where no public polls had been taken and registered Democrats outnumber Republicans.
Markell swamped north Wilmington businessman Jeff Cragg, piling up more than 70 percent of the votes cast.
Carney was running for his second term against New Castle County President Tom Kovach.
In the presidential race, Barack Obama won by a wide version in an race that was called shortly after the polls closed.
Early vote totals came in from Sussex County, with GOP candidate and business owner Sher Valenzuela narrowly trailed Lt. Gov. Matt Denn. Denn later moved into a sizable lead as results came in from elsewhere in the state.
Insurance Commissioner Karen Welden Stewart, also a Democrat, garnered 61 percent of the vote, after a hard-fought primary in her own party, which endorsed another candidate.
For Republicans, their best hope came in picking up seats in the General Assembly, although Democrats will retain control of both houses.
With a Democratic landslide in effect, former New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon easily won election with more than 60 percent of the vote.
In one high-profile race, Republican Gregory Lavelle won out over incumbent Michael Katz in a race in an a Republican-leaning area in northern Delaware. In another Ernesto Lopez emerged as the winner in a state senate race in Sussex County, topping Andrew Staton.
