The Delaware Department of Transportation announced Saturday afternoon the Indian River Bridge has been reopened in both directions.
The bridge was closed by water that flowed in with the approach of what is now known as Superstorm Sandy. DelDOT crews, aided by the Delaware National Guard spent recent days removing stand from the approaches to the bridge.
The status of the bridge was the topic of rumors, due to images, apparently from a traffic camera, that seemed to indicate that the bridge was in trouble.
State officials denied the reports. The new bridge was constructed to withstand hurricane winds.
Officials have indicated a barrier will be built to keep the sand off the approaches.
