Elkton man arrested in connection with shooting in Newark

An Elkton man is in custody in connection with a shooting in Newark.

The suspect is identified as Edward W. Benson, III; Benson was being sought in connection a Sept 28 shooting at a home on Witherspoon Lane in Newark.

Police learned the suspect fled the scene of the shooting in a white Infiniti he was known to have driven. Shortly after the shooting, a white Infiniti was found on fire in the Oak Tree Apartments. It was determined that the uspect had attempted, unsuccessfully, to ignite the vehicle by lighting a rag in the gas tank.

Police seized the vehicle. Investigators determined that Benson had a previous relationship with the victim, with the two having a child together.

Newark officers requested the assistance from the U.S Marshal Service Violent Fugitive Task Force, since Benson was believed to be in the State of Maryland. Benson was located on October 9t by US marshals and Newark officers.  He was taken into custody by the US Marshals in the parking lot of Vlamis’s Liquors on North Bridge Street in Elkton.

Benson was turned over to the Maryland State Police who arrested him on an out of state fugitive warrant. Benson is being held in the Cecil County Detention Center pending extradition back to Delaware where he will be arrested on numerous charges.

The victim is in stable condition and is recovering from her injuries at an area hospital.
