Elkton man arrested after 2 failed robbery attempts

Newark Police arrested Stephen C. Mattucci of Elkton, Md. In connection with two failed robberies in late night hours of October 9.

In the first incident, Newark Police were called to Choate Street for a report of an attempted robbery. Officers learned that two female victims, both 21 year old University of Delaware students, were walking when a white Jeep Laredo traveling the wrong way on the street stopped. A man Igot out of the vehicle with a crowbar in hand and demanded their purses and wallets. Both victims fled without giving up their property and called police.

Shortly thereafter officers were called to the the unit block of New London Road regarding a similar incident. Officers found Mattucci seated in a white Jeep Laredo parked in a UD parking lot directly across the street from the second robbery attempt.

Officers learned that a 24-year-old male victim from Wilmington was seated in his vehicle when Mattucci approached the passenger side  and asked for directions, Mattucci then walked to the driver’s window, broke out the window, choked and struck the victim while demanding. The victim was able to fight off the man, drove away and called police. The victim sustained a cut lip and minor scratches to his face.

Maattucci, 34, was charged with numerous offenses and held at Howard Young Correctional Institure on $40,500 bond.
