Pod Camp East held its first merged event at Delaware Technical and Community College in Wilmington. Attendees came from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and from as far away as Ohio and Indiana.

Pod Camp East features presenters who provide information on a variety of technologies including blogging, social media, business-start-ups with a modest fee of $20 to $25 for two days of sessions. Keynote speaker was U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, who has emerged as a leader in technology issues in that legislative body.

Proceeds from the event, went to TechGirlz, an organization that aims to encourage girls and young women to pursue technology careers through camps and other events.

In announcing the presentation, Gloria Bell, a social media manager from the Philadelphia area, took note of the heavily male representation at technology companies.

Bell said research indicates technology stereotypes that often center on men (common expressions are nerds and geeks) discourage girls from seeking careers.

Bell says girls “ can code” as well as engage in other interests, such as sports.

Pod Camp continues through Sunday.
