Delaware State University had plenty of reasons to celebrate the successful landing of the Curiosity Mars rover early Monday morning.

Dr. Noureddine Melikechi, dean of DSU’s College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology will head up an effort to analyze information coming from the rover as it roams and analyzes the planet.

Melikechi and students will assist in analyzing data that will be sent back by the ChemCam unit on the Curiosity Rover, which will use laser blasts to analyze the planet’s rock composition. The Mars mission will study whether the Gale Crater of Mars has evidence of past and present habitable environments.

In the accompanying video, Melikechi and graduate student Alissa Mezzacappa, collaborators in the project, discuss their roles in the project.
