Newark officer slightly injured following bank robbery

A Newark Police officer was slightly injured after a bank robbery late Friday afternoon led to a vehicle chase and arrest.

Officers said the suspect, identified as Tyler Hawley , 28, of Fairway Road, Newark, entered the PNC Bank branch on New London Road at 5:45 p.m. Witnesses said Hawley, who was brandishing a firearm, demanded cash from three tellers.

He fled the scene in a vehicle. However, the tellers had seen the vehicle and a description was quickly broadcast to officers. The suspect’s  vehicle was later  spotted on nearby Possum Park Road.

Hawley was approached by two Newark Police officers and one Delaware State Police trooper.

He then fled the area, driving over a concrete median and striking a Newark officer.

Officers chased the vehicle and after abandoning the vehicle Hawley was later apprehended in the North Star area north of Newark in the backyard of residence.

He was taken into custody and faces numerous charges.

The Newark officer, who was not identified, was treated and released from Christiana Hospital after being treated for an injured foot and contusions.
