The area south of the St. Georges Bridge will see the mouth-watering smell of barbecue next month. The Middletown Chamber of Commerce and Dutch Country Farmer’s Market are playing host to an expanded Middletown BQ Cook-off on May 18th through 20th.
The competition is a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned event and will qualify as a state championship with the winner earning the chance to compete in the nationals in Tennessee. According to sponsors, the event attracted 47 barbecue teams last year.
The event will be held at Frightland, off Route 13 and north of Middletown. That’s the Halloween place frequented by thousands. With the larger venue, the event will include music, carnival, rides, food vendors and wine.
Barbecue championships have become popular over the years, thanks in part to Food Network and other cable channels that highlight such events. The three-day format should raise the profile of the Delaware championships, started out in Dover.
