The Eagles are world champions

Good morning,

The Philadelphia Eagles are world champions and much of Delaware has a little spring in their step today.

The last championship came shortly before the first Super Bowl, which at the time was not a big deal.

In a game for the ages, both teams marched up and down the field with the Nick Foles carving up the New England Patriots’ defense and becoming the first Super Bowl quarterback to have a touchdown reception.

The Patriot’s legendary quarterback Tom Brady, on a record-setting pace, tried the same gadget play, but could not pull it off. Perhaps his less than legendary foot speed caught up with him.

But it was the defense that sealed the game when Brady fumbled and the Delaware Valley erupted.

We watched the game in an unusual location, a  banquet room in Puerto Vallarta, with a crowd comprised of Patriot, Eagle and a large group of disinterested folks who came for the tailgate fare.

Eagles fans enjoying the tropical weather were louder. New England faithful were smug, believing that the team and its dour coach could pull off another big win.

Earlier in the day,  we talked to passengers from North Dakota with Eagles shirts who decided minus six temperatures were enough.

Their allegiance was to injured quarterback Carson Wentz who helped bring the team to the playoffs.

But in the end, it was a team effort from the owner on down that led to this moment.

The story of how the team put together the right pieces so quickly will be sliced and diced in coming months.

There will be the departures of players and coaching staff that come in today’s NFL. But for now, we can enjoy something special.

This newsletter returns tomorrow from its temporary tropical headquarters. Stay safe and don’t climb any greased poles during the parade.  – Doug and Sharon Rainey.
