Ultra-low fare carriers  Frontier and Volaris announce a new codeshare agreement.

The code share agreement between the airlines will allow both carriers to sell tickets and connecting itineraries on the airlines’ combined networks.

Indigo Partners, Phoenix, owns a minority stake in Volaris and a controlling interest in Frontier, which briefly served the New Castle County Airport, prior to Indigo’s  buyout.

Indigo earlier announced one of the largest aircraft purchases on record, with both Volaris and Frontier signing on to a combined 300-jet order.

“This agreement will allow us to expand upon our mission to deliver low fares and enable more people to fly,” said Barry Biffle, CEO  of Frontier Airlines. “Many customers traveling between the U.S. and Mexico are forced to pay high fares to fly, and this agreement will provide lower fares to a vast majority of the U.S. and Mexico population. As the leading ultra-low-cost carrier in Mexico, Volaris is an ideal partner with which to align and we look forward to work together to deliver low fares to millions of people.”

The agreement will allow Frontier to place and sell tickets with its code (F9) on Volaris operated flights and for Volaris to place its code (Y4) on Frontier operated flights.

On the East Coast, Volaris serves  New York (Kennedy) and Washington (Dulles) with flights to Mexico and Central America

“At Volaris we are thrilled to join Frontier Airlines as one of the first ULCC carriers to enter a codeshare agreement. We estimate that our partnership will add around 20 new destinations to our network and 80 new routes between both Mexico and the United States,” said Enrique Beltranena,  CEO of Volaris. “Our goal is to unite families and friends on both sides of the border, and this new agreement with our partners at Frontier will allow us to expand the travel options for our audience while keeping fares low.”

Beginning in spring 2018, flights will be available directly through Frontier on the company’s website flyfrontier.com, its mobile application and its call center.

Flights will also be available through third-party distributors including online travel agencies. Flights also will be available directly through Volaris’ website volaris.com and mobile application.

The carriers each serve more than 20 of the same markets.

In addition, both carriers fly Airbus A320 aircraft. Frontier operates a fleet of 78 aircraft with 199 additional aircraft on order and Volaris operates a fleet of 71 with 128 additional aircraft on order.
