Associated Builders and Contractors Delaware Chapter announced the winners in the annual Excellence in Construction competition. The winners were honored at a dinner in mid-November.

Winning entries are as follows

DiSabatino Construction

DiSabatino Construction is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $10-15 million category for Phase 1 of The Flats Redevelopment. The project revitalized two blocks of an over 100-year-old neighborhood in Wilmington. The project team, which was comprised of more than 70 percent ABC Delaware members, worked to complete the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

Spacecon

In the specialty category of carpentry and drywall/acoustical, Spacecon is presented with an Excellence for The Archer Group. Spacecon was part of Bancroft Construction Company’s team to fit-out the Archer Group’s new office space in Wilmington. This tenant fit-out was a modern and open layout in an existing building.

Wohlsen Construction

Wohlsen Construction is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $30-60 million category for CSC. CSC selected Wohlsen and NORR Architects to complete the company’s new global headquarters, spanning nearly 150,000 ft. The four-story building provides CSC with a cutting-edge workplace.

George & Lynch

In the Site/Civil under $2 million category, George & Lynch was presented an Excellence award. With only 14 days to complete, George & Lynch completely replaced an existing old railroad crossing on US 113 in Milford, DE. Using hour-by-hour scheduling, they were able to meet the milestones.

Emory Hill

In the GC/CM under $2 million category, Emory Hill received an Excellence award. Emory Hill & Company built the Sultana Education Foundation’s new Richard & Virginia Holt Center in Chestertown’s Historic District which melded a 19th-century building with a new facility meeting LEED Platinum requirements to fulfill the foundation’s expansion goals.

GGA Construction

GGA Construction is presented an Excellence in the GC/CM $5-10 million category for Las Americas. The new Aspira Charter School project was completed under budget and in only nine months. Crews worked around the clock to transform an old warehouse using a design/build delivery system.

Richard Y. Johnson

In the GC/CM $ 15-20 million category, Richard Y. Johnson is awarded an Excellence for the Delaware Turf Sports Complex. The project included 12 new synthetic turf athletic fields and five support buildings. Challenges included coordination with DelDOT and the new south Frederica overpass as well as sequencing of fields to limit overall site disturbance. The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.

Eastern Industrial Services

Eastern Industrial Services is awarded and Excellence for the specialty trade category thermal insulation/firestop at the University of Delaware’s South Academy Street Residence Hall. Partnering with R.G. Degli Obizzi & Sons, Eastern completed all the required work safely, on budget and on time.

Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons

In the mechanical $2-10 million, Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons is awarded Excellence for the University of Delaware’s South Academy Street Residence Hall. This project was built on pride with the Merit Shop construction philosophy. The building is a 120,000 square foot residence hall with the capability of housing 540 first-year students.

Bancroft Construction

Bancroft Construction is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $60 million & over category for the Longwood Gardens Main Fountain project. The project involved the complete revitalization of the centerpiece of North America’s most significant fountain collection. The two-year, nearly $90 million project was the largest preservation of its kind in the US.

Farrell Roofing

Farrell Roofing is honored with an Excellence in the specialty category of roofing. The University of Delaware’s Colburn Lab roof replacement consisted of installing all new tapered insulation, gypsum cover board and modified bituminous and reinforced liquid urethane roofing materials.

Assurance Media

Assurance Media is presented an Excellence in the specialty category of low voltage cabling and AV systems. Assurance Media provide Wawa’s headquarters with telecommunications and audiovisual infrastructure. More than 52 miles of voice and data cabling was installed to over 800 locations around the facility.

The Tri-M Group

In the electrical $10 million & over category, The Tri-M Group is awarded an Excellence for the Longwood Gardens Fountain. Tri-M provided the power, lighting and controls that bring the Main Fountain Garden to life.

RC Fabricators

In the specialty trade category of steel fabrication/erection, RC Fabricators is awarded an Excellence for Wawa Corporate Headquarters. Wawa experienced exponential growth. The expansion required two structures with 198,000 sq. ft. of space and 4,000 tons of steel.

Bancroft Construction

In the GC/CM $2-5 million category, Bancroft Construction is awarded an Excellence for The Archer Group’s 20,000 sq. ft. headquarters within the 10-story Courthouse Square building in Wilmington. The office features traditional workspaces with virtual and augmented reality technologies for the digital marketing company.

Nickle Electrical Companies

In the $2-10 million electrical category, Nickle Electrical Companies is honored with an Excellence for the University of Delaware’s Cannon Lab. The renovation project was a complete electrical and mechanical upgrade. A new 600-kilowatt emergency backup generator was installed, along with a brand new rood, and the second-floor library was also updated.

Richard Y. Johnson

Richard Y. Johnson & Son is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $20-30 million for the Love Creek Elementary School. The new 720-student school, a prototype for a series of three new buildings to address growth in Cape Henlopen School District, was finished on time and under budget.

Corrado Construction

In the Site/Civil $2-5 million category, Corrado Construction is presented an Excellence award. Corrado completed 87 acres of site improvements for the DE Turf Sports Complex, which consisted of 12 synthetic turf fields and indoor field house. The site work included 10 acres of pavement and nearly three acres of sidewalk. Over 3.5 miles of underground utilities were installed.

JF Sobieski

In the mechanical under $2 million category, J.F. Sobieski Mechanical is honored with an excellence for its work at CSC. CSC Headquarters, a 148,000 sq.ft., four-story building comprising the most state of the art workspace offers employees conveniences such as a fully catered cafeteria, break areas throughout, mother and quiet rooms and rooftop picnic areas on the green roof.

Merit awards

Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons

In the mechanical under $2 million category, Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons is presented a Merit for the Cogeneration Plant at Christiana Hospital. The plant consisted of a 2-megawatt electric generator, a waste heat recovery steam boiler and four diesel-powered 2.5-megawatt emergency electric generators. The COGEN Plant has saved Christiana Care approximately $1 million annually.

The Cobi Group

The Cobi Group is awarded a Merit in the GC/CM under $2 million category for Serpe’s Bakery. One Christmas Eve 2015, after 60 years in business, Serpe & Sons Bakery suffered a devastating fire. Within seven months, the bakery was reopened as scheduled.

Assurance Media

In the specialty trade category of low voltage cabling and AV systems, Assurance Media is honored with a Merit for The Archer Group. Assurance Media designed and installed the low voltage telecommunications, audiovisual and security systems for Archer Group’s stylish new office.

BPGS

BPGS is awarded a Merit in the GC/CM $5-10 million category for the Power Home Remodeling Group fit out. The project was a renovation of 100,000 sq. ft. of space in the Chester Wharf. Highlights include: living wall with multiple plant species, a 250-person auditorium, a video production room with green screen and an executive lounge.

Wohlsen Construction

In the GC/CM $2-5 million category, Wohlsen Construction is honored with a Merit. Wohlsen Construction and Array Architects completed their fifth project for Universal Health Services, the addition, and renovation to the Dover Behavioral Health Center

Bausum & Duckett Electrical

Bausum & Duckett Electrical is honored with a Merit in the electrical $2-10 million category for Insignia on M in Washington, D.C. The 13-story high-rise building sits directly above the Naval Yard Ballpark Metro Station in D.C.’s Capitol riverfront neighborhood. The building contains 324 luxury apartments, 11,00 sq. ft. of retail space and three levels of below grade parking.

Nowland Associates

In the GC/CM category $2-5 million category, Nowland Associates is awarded a Merit. The New Castle Auto Spa selected Nowland Associates as the design/builder for the construction of their state-of-the-art facility located on South DuPont Highway.

ERCO Ceilings & Interiors

Erco Ceilings & Interiors is honored with a Merit in the specialty category acoustical. Erco installed the acoustical ceiling and wall panels at the Las Americas ASPIRA Academy in Newark. Erco was able to complete this job successfully while maintaining budget, meeting complex design requirements and working on a tight schedule in a collaborative relationship with the general contractor and owner.

Nickle Electrical Companies

In the electrical under $2 million category, Nickle Electrical Companies is awarded a Merit for Hosting.com. This project included the install of two 500KVA UPS systems with a bypass switch for four transformers, four distributions panes, four secondary panels and 16 panels in the server room. A new 500-kilowatt generator was also installed.

Bancroft Construction

In the GC/CM under $2 million category, Bancroft Construction is presented a Merit for University of Delaware’s Evans Hall Cyber iSuite. The suite provides a space for students to practice skills in a variety of scenarios and “capture-the-flag” type exercises where they can test programs for security flaws, build coding skills, respond to attacks and learn countermeasures.

Service Unlimited

Service Unlimited is presented a Merit in the mechanical under $2 million. Service Unlimited’s First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary HVAC upgrade project included two high efficient Carrier HVAC and Honeywell control systems to replace and upgrade their existing 50-year-old HVAC system while providing an additional 870 sq. ft. of storage room in the old mechanical room.

Whiting-Turner Contracting

In the GC/CM $5-10 million category, a Merit is awarded to The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company for the first phase of a new academic building for Washington College in Chestertown, MD. The project included demolition of the existing building and construction of a new 14,400 sq. ft. building which houses offices, classrooms, laboratory space and study areas.
