Main Street Movies 5 opens Friday at the Newark Shopping Center.

The five-screen theater will offer first-run movies. It replaces the Newark Cinema Center, which was closed.

The old theater struggled with repairs, HVAC issues, parking enforcement and an industry-wide  changeover to digital film projection. The new complex was announced in January of 2016. (See earlier story below)

The first movies to be shown will be Logan, The Shack, A Dog’s Purpose and Get Out.

Coming later in the month is Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

The theater will feature discounted tickets on Tuesdays and will feature a party room that can be rented at an additional charge.

The theater was also granted a liquor license and has reclining seats, along with reserved seating.

The theater should also help the Newark Shopping Center, which landed Newark Natural Foods, but still has vacant store space.

Movies 5 is the third independent cinema complex in New Castle County to open in recent years. It joins Westown and Penn Cinema on Wilmington’s Riverfront.
