UD’s hospitality program ranks 4th on top 10 list

University of Delaware’s Department  of Hospitality Business Management took the No. four spot  in a national ranking. 

The ranking came from College Factual, with only Cornell, New York University and Indiana’s Purdue ranking ahead of  UD.

UD  ranked second in the average pay of graduates from the hospitality program. 

In September, the department was ranked 16th in a top 30  listing of  programs in that field. That  ranking came from BestSchools.org. It was the first time, HRIM was ranked in the top 30 list.

Among  universities in the Delaware Valley, only Temple ranked ahead of UD at 14th, The top three schools were Cornell, Michigan State and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

The  department is part of  the University of Delaware’s   Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics and recently had its name shortened from HRIM (Hospitality, Restaurant and Institutional Management). 

Commentary accompanying the BestSchools  ranking cited the requirement that students must complete  700 hours of paid hospitality work experience and 100 hours of community service.

Also, students  must complete  complete practicums in the student-operated Vita Nova, a gourmet restaurant, and at the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware.

The department is also known for its high placement rate in the growing industry.
