County Executive Tom Gordon lost a bid to remove Matt Meyer from the general election ballot.
According to a letter from Board of Elections Director Elaine Manlove, which was posted by the News Journal and WDEL, Meyer met the requirements for five years of residency in New Castle County.
The News Journal ran a lengthy story on the issue this week, citing tax records and other evidence that he resided in the county
Meyer’s LinkedIn listing shows that he taught at Prestige Academy in Wilmington from 2013 to 2015 and also worked as a partner in a Washington, DC law firm during that period.
The listing has no information on his work in 2012 but noted that he served before that period in Iraq on an assignment with the U.S. State Department.
The letter from Gordon’s lawyer claimed that Meyer filed a non-resident tax return in Delaware for 2011 and did not pay city taxes in Wilmington despite his claim of being a resident.
The request, came a few weeks before the elections and after some residents had already cast absentee ballots.
Gordon suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of Meyer in the September primary while serving his third term as county executive.
Gordon’s three terms have been tumultuous, with allegations of election abuses during his first time around as county executive. Gordon was sentenced to probation.
A run-in and firing of his top administrator David Grimaldi led to a lawsuit from Grimaldi and the release of expectative-filled tapes of Gordon’s conversations.
Meyer was not shy about mentioning Gordon’s legacy of facing corruption allegations. Gordon is a former County Police Chief.
Gordon could continue the battle by taking the matter to court, but would face an uphill fight.
