Beebe Healthcare and Beebe Medical Foundation recognized Srihari Peri, MD, medical director of the Tunnell Cancer Center, with the Philanthropy Award for his continued support of the Cancer Center and the care he provides his patients.

“Dr. Peri, since he has been with Beebe, has supported the Cancer Center personally with his own philanthropy, and has encouraged others to do so,” said Judy Aliquo, CEO of Beebe Medical Foundation. “Tunnell Cancer Center would never have grown from a three-person staff to a free-standing cancer center on Route 24 without the strong support of the community.  The Tunnell family has embraced the cancer center and continues to strongly support it

Aliquo and Tom Protack, vice president of development for Beebe Medical Foundation, presented the award to  Peri at the fifth annual New Provider Reception and Physician Awards dinner event.

Peri, a Board Certified hematologist and medical oncologist, joined Beebe Healthcare in 1991 as the organization’s first, full-time oncologist.  When Tunnell Cancer Center was created in 1995 through a $1 million donation from W. Robert Tunnell, Sr. and his wife Eolyne Tunnell,  Peri was named its first Medical Director, and continues to hold that position.

Under  Peri’s medical leadership, Tunnell Cancer Center became a center that provides multidisciplinary and comprehensive cancer care and treatment. The center grew from a staff of five team members to nearly 100 team members today, including 11 oncologists, and from an area within the Medical Center in Lewes to the entire first floor of the Medical Arts Building at the Beebe Health Campus on John J. Williams Highway in Rehoboth Beach.

In June 2009, Tunnell Cancer Center was named a recipient of the 2008 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence.  Tunnell Cancer Center is one of only 95 cancer programs across the nation, and the only one in Delaware, to earn this award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

In the spring of 2015, the Commission on Cancer presented Tunnell Cancer Center with the 2014 Outstanding Achievement Award. Tunnell is one of only 75 U.S. healthcare facilities out of 588 CoC-accredited Comprehensive Community Centers to receive this award.

This past September, the Cancer Support Community Delaware, a statewide organization, honored Dr.  Peri with the 2016 Humanitarian of the Year Award for his humanitarian work in improving the quality of life and health for so many people.

Beebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the sole mission to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Healthcare.
