Delaware State named to Delaware State University Board

The Delaware State University Board of Trustees today swore in its newest member – Dr. Debbie Harrington, a retired U.S. Army colonel.

Harrington has been appointed to a six-year term by the board to succeed former board member Wesley Perkins, whose term expired Sept. 1.

In her Army career, Harrington was an expert logistician with 25 years of experience in international multi-modal transportation systems and infrastructure, procurement, contracts, facility management and supply distribution.

After her retirement from the U.S. Army in 2005, she worked in the areas of nonprofit organizational management, community development and social justice.

She has served the State of Delaware in several capacities. She was a member of a task force established by the state General Assembly to study education for students with visual impairments. She also works with the Delaware Department of Visual Impairment on education and employment initiatives and serves on its Rehabilitation Advisory Council.

Most recently, Harrington has worked with the Delaware Department of Education to strategically plan for the education of students with low-incidence disabilities. She also is an appointed commissioner and chairs the commission that administrates the State Use Law.

She has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Norfolk State University in Virginia, a Master of Science in  National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C., and a Doctor of Education in Innovation and Organizational Leadership from Wilmington University.

Pollock named Distinguished Professor

Lori Pollock has been named Alumni Distinguished Professor in the University of Delaware Department of Computer and Information Sciences, effective Sept. 1. The professorship was established with an endowment commitment made by the UD Alumni Association in 2002.

Pollock, who joined the UD faculty in 1991, conducts research in the general areas of software engineering and compiler optimization, with her current work focused on green software engineering, text analysis of software artifacts for improving software maintenance, and automated software testing.

Pollock was named an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Distinguished Scientist in 2010, an honor that recognizes up to 10 percent of the top ACM professional members.

Pollock’s research has been continuously supported by more than 25 research grants from the National Science Foundation, the Army Research Laboratory, and ABB Inc. She currently serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Software Testing, Verification and Reliability, and she has served as associate editor for ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology.

She regularly serves as a program committee member and reviewer for the major conferences and journals in software engineering, programming language design and implementation, and high-performance computing. She also served on the executive committee and as an officer of ACM SIGPLAN for several terms.

Pollock was awarded the ACM Special Interest Group in Software Engineering Most Influential Educator Award in 2016, and she received UD’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001. She has graduated 17 doctoral students and 10 master’s degree students, and she has supervised the research of 51 undergraduates. She has been principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on 11 external grants for education, and she co-leads the Partner4CS team, which is providing professional development and ongoing support to K-12 teachers to integrate computer science into Delaware schools.

Pollock earned her doctorate and master of science degrees in computer science at the University of Pittsburgh in 1986 and 1983, respectively, and her bachelor of science degree in computer science and economics at Allegheny College in 1981

 Peninsula Home Care names White branch director

Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke announced the promotion of Beverly White to branch director of the Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke branch in Seaford, Delaware.

As Branch Director of PHCN, she will be accountable for organizing and managing all aspects of administrative and clinical activity in the branch.

She is responsible for the growth of agency business and increasing the market share through innovative marketing programs and quality services. White is also responsible for financial management to achieve all company stated goals and for the integrity of service delivery to meet regulatory, company and professional standards. She will also manage the staff through recruitment and retention efforts and by providing an environment for individuals to be successful.

In October, 2015,White joined the Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke team as a community liaison.  She was responsible for sales, marketing, branding and business growth in the Delaware region.  She has a Master’s of Science in Healthcare Administration, and by December 2016 will have completed her Doctorate of Education/Organizational Leadership and Administration degree.  She is also licensed as a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist.

She started a career in health care in 1991.  Past work experience includes working as a recreational specialist with Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland and Sheppard Pratt Health Systems in Towson, Maryland.  She has experience in program design and facilitation, patient needs assessments and treatment planning, direct clinical care and diagnosis education.

Nanticoke Memorial Hospital names director

Nanticoke Memorial Hospital announced that Lisa Miller has been named Director of Respiratory & Neurology Services. In this position, Miller is responsible for daily operations of both the Respiratory and Neurology departments at the hospital.

Miller began her career at Nanticoke in June 2002 as a Certified Respiratory Therapist. After becoming a Registered Therapist, she moved into the role of Charge Therapist. After spending several years in this role, she was promoted to the Manager of Respiratory Care. She received her Associates of Applied Sciences in Respiratory Care from Delaware Technical Community College and is working toward her bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences at Wilmington University.

During her time at Nanticoke, Miller’s contributions to the respiratory department and community outreach have helped the hospital receive national recognition by the U.S. News and World Reports Best Hospitals as “high performing in the area of COPD Education.” Additionally, the respiratory department has developed a partnership with Nemours, allowing children to remain at Nanticoke who traditionally would have been transferred and saving families the expense and burden of a stay further from home.
