Spirit Airlines will begin operating new daily non-stop service from Philadelphia International Airport to Orlando International Airport beginning on October 7.
Orlando is the most popular domestic destination for passengers from PHL.
“Spirit’s new non-stop service to Orlando will provide a travel option that our budget-conscious travelers will appreciate,” stated airport CEO, Chellie Cameron. “We continue to work with all of our airline partners offering flights with varying levels of amenities and schedules so PHL can be one of the most affordable airports in the country.”
Philadelphia has been known, at times as a “fortress hub” for US Airways (now American) with high fares to some destinations. However, competitors have been adding service, aided by low fuel prices.
Spirit is an ultra-low fare airline that offers lower base fares and then charges for all other amenities including carry-on luggage. Rival Frontier Airlines also offers service from Philadephia to Orlando and for a time offered service from New Castle Airport to the Florida destination.
Philadelphia International now offers non-stop service to 96 domestic and 36 international destinations. The Orlando route is also served by American Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
Spirit launched service out of Philadelphia in 2013 with non-stop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth. Spirit has since added non-stop service to Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale and Myrtle Beach.
