Beer garden to remain open this summer

ConstitutionYards Rendering Final 2The Constitution Yards beer garden was granted a two-year license by Delaware Alcohol Beverage Director John  Cordrey.

The  approval  which came after Cordrey allowed the site to remain open while he made a final decision

Neighbors in a nearby condominium had expressed their opposition to the beer garden, which opened last month on the Wilmington Riverfront, citing noise and the loss of the opportunity to open their windows while the entertainment spot was in operation.

A lengthy public hearing was held by Cordrey that also showed support from businesses in the area and others.

The beer garden was built with an innovative design  that used shipping containers. The site had been used during the last two winters as an ice skating rink.

Offered at the site is craft beer, cocktails and food.

The beer garden was spearheaded by the Riverfront Development Corp., a state entity.

“We are excited and appreciative that Commissioner Cordrey has granted our application for the Biennial Gathering License. We believe that the beer garden is an incredible addition to the Riverfront, and we are grateful for the tremendous positive response it has received from our community,” stated Megan, McGlinchey, acting director of the Riverfront Development Corp.

The region has upwards of two dozen beer gardens. Beer gardens which were popular among immigrants of Germany and other nations  until Prohibition.

Over the past several years, a number of beer gardens have opened, an outgrowth of the exploding popularity of outdoor dining.
