The landmark Dolles on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk are among the attractions that draw visitors to beach rentals.

With Memorial Day Weekend nearly here, the rental affairs committee of the Sussex County Association of Realtors (SCAOR) met recently with officials from all six of southern Delaware’s coastal communities for a discussion on the upcoming summer season.

SCAOR member Realtors met with officials from Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, South Bethany and Fenwick Island at the administration building of Jungle Jim’s Water Park in Rehoboth Beach, according to a release.

Topics discussed included ways of enforcing existing ordinances, parking issues, traffic congestion and pedestrian safety, among many others.

This is the second consecutive year that SCAOR Realtors who specialize in coastal rental properties have formally met with officials from Delaware’s resort communities. The goal is ultimately to keep the lines of communication open and to examine ways of solving similar problems and issues.

Officials from each town had a chance to speak in front of the group and discuss any seasonal issues they encounter regularly, as well as solutions and proposals that successfully or unsuccessfully addressed those issues.

In 2014, more than eight million tourists visited Delaware, contributing $3 billion to the state’s gross domestic product, according to figures from the Delaware Tourism Office. A significant portion of that was spent at Sussex County’s beach resorts, where 26 miles of Atlantic coastline continue to draw record numbers of tourists every year, the assocaiation noted.

Many of those visitors have second homes in the county, while others book rooms in the region’s hotels and motels. But many others occupy rental homes – the  focus of the rental affairs committee and this collaborative effort.

Coastal Delaware’s traditional summer season begins this weekend and runs through the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 5.

The tourism industry is one of southern Delaware’s leading financial drivers, along with the poultry industry.

SCAOR is a resource for the public, as well as a recognized advocate for property rights and property owners in Sussex County. The association also monitors legislative issues on the local, state and national levels.
