UnknownBrandywine School District voters overwhelmingly  approved a referendum on the second try.

Unofficial results showed the final tally at  9,612 in favor and 5,780 against.

In a much smaller turnout in March, the referendum was narrowly defeated by a 3,729 to 3,892  margin.

The increase in property taxes will help fund the operating budget as well as a building project.

The referendum marked another victory for Gov. Jack Markell, who urged a yes vote. A similar endorsement had come before Christina School District voters approved a referendum after other failed attempts.

Opponents had focused on what they viewed as a top-heavy district administrative staff as well as overspending in other areas.

The district serves students in the north Wilmington area with a small section of the district in the City of Wilmington.
