GroundbreakingBayhealth broke ground Tuesday  on a $275 million to $300 million  health campus project in Milford

“A project like this doesn’t happen overnight; it takes to research, imagination, determination, and knowhow,” he said. “It also takes the will to change the status quo and create something new. We view the health campus project as a $275 to $300 million re-investment in the health of our community,” said Bayhealth CEO Terry Murphy.

The health campus is slated to open in 2019. The site –  off Route 1 – provides patient access, and with more than 165 acres of land, the health campus will be able to grow and expand to meet the region’s future healthcare needs.

The Milford area, as well as central and southern Delaware, are seeing a population increase, with an influx of retirees.

The campus health plan features a LEAN Led design focused on efficiency and the ultimate goal of improving the overall patient experience. Bayhealth team members and physicians are actively involved in the campus  plans, working with design teams to make the best decisions for their future patients.

“This kind of expansion is critical to ensuring we are working toward the positive evolution of healthcare delivery, and health outcomes in Delaware,” said Gov.  Jack Markell. “Keeping the patient’s needs at the center of planning projects like this helps us work toward a more efficient coordination of care, and I congratulate Bayhealth on this new campus.”

The campus will include a six-story hospital with an expanded emergency department, additional operating rooms, all private patient rooms, and a cafeteria on the first floor with outdoor seating. As this is more than a hospital, there will also be a 70,000 square foot outpatient center with additional services.

Nemours Children’s Health System will provide specialized services for children and older adults in a separate building on the health campus.

“Bayhealth has been a strong partner for Nemours and shares our commitment to improving the health of the communities we serve,” said CEO Valley Operations and Executive Vice President, Nemours Roy Proujansky, MD. “We are honored to be part of this innovative health campus project and look forward to bringing comprehensive pediatric care even closer to home for many Delaware families.”

Future uses for the  Milford Memorial Hosptial site are being studied.

Bayhealth also operates Kent General Hospital in Dover, along with associated services and practices.
