Univeristy of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak introduced Notre Dame assistant coach Martin Ingelsby as the Blue Hens’ new men’s basketball head coach.
A native of Berwyn, Pa. and a f player for the Irish in 1997-2001, Ingelsby, 37, has served on head coach Mike Brey’s staff for 13 seasons, including the last seven as an assistant after serving six seasons as coordinator of basketball operations.
Brey served as Delaware’s head coach for five seasons (1995-2000) and led the Blue Hens to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1998 and 1999. Brey is widely considered to be UD’s most successful basketball coach and remains popular in the university community.
While at Notre Dame, Ingelsby has led the Irish to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including consecutive berths in the NCAA Regional Finals in 2015 and 2016. Notre Dame went 32-6 in 2014-15 and followed with a 24-12 mark this past season.
Ingelsby was a three-year starter at point guard and averaged 8.2 points and a team-high 6.4 assists per game as a senior in 2001-01 when he led Notre Dame to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade. He earned his degree in marketing in 2001.
Before joining the Irish staff in 2003-04, he was an assistant coach at Wagner College in 2002-03 and helped lead the team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The native of the Delaware Valley will have his share of challenges, given the late date of the hire, which comes after high school recruiting season.
UD released long-time coach Monte Ross at the end of the year and later fired the Athletic Director Eric Ziady, who had earlier taken heat when the university was slow to renew Ross’ final contract
Rawak was recently hired as athletic director, after a successful career at the University of Michigan that included successful fund-raising efforts. (Includes reporting from bluehens.com.
