Students in the University of Delaware’s Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Facilities class learned more about high-voltage electricity as a demonstration unit from Delmarva Power paid a visit.

The Delmarva mobile unit, sponsored by the utility and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,  is used to demonstrate the dangers of high-voltage to schools, media and other organizations.

Newark-based Blue Hen Utility Services also offered classroom instruction to the class.  Blue Hen provides services to electric utilities and other users.

Dangers for utility workers and the public are especially high when lines are down, due to vehicle accidents or storms.

Risks have also become greater as more lines remain live near homes.

Improper use of portable generators during outages can lead to energized lines.
