mosquitozikaThe Centers for Disease Control has confirmed Delaware’s first case of Zika virus in an adult woman.

Two other cases were reported in Pennsylvania.

The case is travel-related and pregnancy is not an issue, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health.

The most serious threat linked to Zika is birth defects in infants whose mother contracted the disease.

The Delaware Division of Public Health is  working  to build   awareness on preventing exposure for pregnant women and their partners.

The outbreak is leading health care professionals to suggest that women who are pregnant consider whether  they should travel to countries where the carrier mosquito is present.

Zika is a generally mild illness that is  widespread in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Anyone who lives or travels in the warm weather  areas can be infected. Most  people who are infected with Zika do not develop symptoms.
