It is hard to overstate the need for projects like the $40 million redevelopment of the aging “Galleria” retail and office building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington. =
The complex on Wilmington’s “auto row” would top-flight residential space to the area that escaped the blight we saw elsewhere when dealers moved to the suburbs. The Ursomarso and Uffner families deserve our thanks for their commitment to the area.
Still, the gateway to downtown is on the bubble, thanks in part to the largely inaccurate perceptions about crime and an aging building that now occupies the site. A pipe break last year proved to be a near-disaster for one business.
The building blocks are in place with efforts to revitalize the adjacent Little Italy area. Trolley Square, Highlands, and other neighborhoods would also benefit.
The site does come with some problems that include congestion around the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Union Street.
Also, the size and scale of the building will also be an issue for some and businesses will have to be relocated.
Notwithstanding these concerns, the project, with as much input as possible from neighbors, should go forward as it is critical to the continued growth and development of a key area in the city.
