Speedway, a Midwestern service station and convenience store chain,  has converted Hess stations in Delaware and other areas  to its name.

Not in the mix are the beloved Hess toys.

Speedway  is a  unit of Marathon, a well known oil  company in the Midwest.

Speedway got its start as a gasoline station chain in the Midwest. In 2014, Hess sold its retail operations on the East Coast and Southeast  to Marathon, allowing the company to move east.  Marathon has until 2017 to change the Hess name to Speedway under the terms of the sale.

In the early 200s,  Hess acquired  the owner of the  Merit  gas station chain and brought the beloved Hess trucks to newly acquired stations in Delaware.

You might remember Merit as a  gritty  the non-nonsense gas station chain that operated from New York to Philadelphia. Its small convenience  stores offer little competition to major players like Wawa and Hess did not move to acquire bigger sites for stations or convenience stores.

Speedway does gain busy locations in Delaware that include Kirkwood Highway and Route 13 (DuPont Highway) in New Castle and Dover.

The Hess  trucks, which have been around for a half century, will not be sold at Speedway stores, but will be available online later this year.

The popular toy line has been  expanded over the years  to include cars, helicopters and even rockets.

The trucks remain popular collector’s items and can fetch high prices at  shows and on  eBay.  The late Leon Hess, who headed the company and owned the New York Jets, is credited with starting the popular toy line that is sold during the holidays.

Marathon, a mid-sized oil company, has an interesting history. After being a takeover target in the 1980s,  it was acquired in a friendly deal by the holding company for US Steel.

Marathon was later spun off from US Steel. With the sharp downturn in oil prices, it will be interesting to see if the company can maintain its independence in an industry dominated by giants such as BP, ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips.

Prior to its merger with Phillips, Conoco was owned for a time by DuPont.

  3. I made a complaint today about your Dover Delaware gas station! I been going there for years to purchase kerosene. I went in your store today and was turned away because your manager nin this store says the policy says you have to have a blue kerosene can. My kersosene can is from Walmart it has a blue label in the middle stating kEROSENE STORAGE CONTAINER on it. I showed the cashier and she still would not take my money. I’m very ticked off because this is the only place I ever go to get kerosene. I’m writing this complaint because I really think it was wrong for your manager of the store to turn me away when my can clearly stated kerosene. And to finish this out 2 nights prior to this I purchased kerosene in my can by a young man working around 6:30. I hope there is some type of change to your policy because I hate to travel all around dover just to find kerosene.
