A fire that destroyed a building near Dover, Sunday morning is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office.
In responding to the blaze, a fire truck overturned en route causing one minor injury.
The fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m. in the 1800 block of East Denny’s Road. The Leipsic Fire Company arrived on the scene and found flames engulfing the unoccupied building.
Deputy fire marshals were called to the scene to probe the fire’s origin and cause. The nearly 6,000-square-foot building was heavily damaged. Investigators are searching through the remains of the building which was being used to support the land owner’s farming operations.
Damage was estimated at $200,000. No one was injured.
The fire truck crash occurred at 4:30 a.m. as John B. Burkett, 72 of Dover, was driving a 2000 International Fire Truck southbound on East Dennys Road in the area of Simms Woods Road.
The engine truck was passing another fire truck when the left side tires drove off the pavement causing the weight of the truck to shift and overturn on its left side.
Burkett was transported from the scene by EMS to Kent General Hospital where he was examined and released with no injuries.
Four firefighters on the truck were not injured.
