burgerThe Delaware Burger Battle heats up on August 23, 2014, noon to 3:30 p.m.

Burger makers in Delaware will square off in the Burger Battle Arena at Twin Lakes Brewery in Greenville. Restaurants will offer samples of their best burgers; a panel of judges will select the Critic’s Choice Winner, and guests will vote on the People’s Choice Winner.

The Burger Battle marks  the unofficial last weekend of summer for many families anticipating Monday as the start to a new school year. A name change for the battle in year three reflects growing participation from around the state.

“In a way, we’ve always been the ‘Delaware’ Burger Battle,” said event organizer JulieAnne Cross. “We’ve had participating restaurants from not just Wilmington, but Greenville, Centreville, Newport, Newark, Odessa and Rehoboth Beach. Last year’s Critic’s Choice Burger winner was a Hockessin restaurant, Redfire Grill & Steakhouse. The Burger Battle’s name change reflects the statewide interest in the competition.”

The Burger Battle was recently cited by the Business Insider as the source for its May 21, 2014 roundup of “The Best Burger in Every State,” which highlighted 2013 People’s Choice Burger winner Union City Grille.

Once again, money raised from the battle will benefit Ministry of Caring’s Emmanuel Dining Room, which works to alleviate the immediate needs of Delaware’s hungry. Over the past two years, more than $11,000 has been raised and donated to the Ministry of Caring from Burger Battles.

A list of competing restaurants will be released soon. Any restaurant interesting in entering the Burger Battle Arena can contact JulieAnne Cross at wilmonites@gmail.com. Early-bird tickets are now available on the Delaware Burger Battle website. Tickets are $35 (plus processing fees) until June 23, $40 through July 23 and $45 through Aug. 22. Tickets will be $55 at the door. Teen tickets (for people ages 11-20) are $15, and tickets for children 10 and under are $5.
