Outdoor goods giant Cabela’s opened its store in Christiana Mall at 11 a.m. on Monday as a crowd streamed into the store on the edge of the mall property. The store will employ upwards of 300 people, according to officials with the Nebraska-based company.
WDEL reported that 4,500 people gathered for the event, with a number lining up to be the first to enter on Wednesday night.
The store is smaller than some of the Cabela’s that operate in rural areas, but has a number of entertainment options including an aquarium.
The company operates a large mail order business that later led to the retail superstores. Cabela’s also has its own credit card. Rather than bringing in dignitaries to cut the ribbon, a store associate used a bow and arrow to cut the ribbon. Newark-based W.L. Gore and Associates was on hand with a traveling exhibit of the products that use its apparel technologies.
The store held a number of press and pre-opening events prior to the formal opening.
