The Wilmington Film Festival kicks off this week at the Penn Cinema Riverfront in Wilmington.

The festival is the successor to the Newark Film Festival, which was held in late summer. Films will be screened Friday through Sunday. A benefit event featuring film trailers and an IMAX movie benefitting Easter Seals are slated for Wednesday and Thursday.

Organizer of the festival is Barry Schlecker, who has revived other community festivals and events in the area, such as the Brandywine Arts Festival for the Arts. He is well known locally for pioneering business networking and operating a staffing company.

The festival features films that in most cases won’t make their way into your local cinema and often involve serious topics.

One exception will be the midnight movie, The Big Lebowski, an oddball comedy that has become a favorite with many movie-goers.
