Penn Cinema Riverfront, the new 15-screen multiplex and IMAX theater on the Wilmington Riverfront, will open its doors a day earlier than earlier announced, to test its systems and to raise money for two Delaware nonprofits.

After a ribbon cutting at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, the theater will run its “Test Run for Delaware” starting at 4 p.m. Tickets for movies on regular screens will cost  $5, and IMAX will sell for $10. All ticket proceeds will be split between the Delaware Children’s Museum and the Delaware Chapter of the National MS Society.

Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s box office or in advance on Fandango.com.

Among the movies showing during the test run will be the IMAX documentary “Under the Sea.”

“We see this partnership with the Delaware Children’s Museum and the Delaware MS Society as a way to really become a part of the Delaware Community and help the greater good,” said Penn Ketchum, Managing Partner of Penn Cinema. “We hope you will take this opportunity to check out the new theaters, enjoying some great titles, and help these very worthy causes.”

“We’re excited about this fabulous new theater opening in Wilmington – and of course thrilled to be a part of it,” said Kate Cowperthwait, Delaware Chapter President. “Our new partnership will enable us to reach new audiences and raise funds during the holiday season when so many families affected by MS are struggling the most.”

After the test run, Penn Cinema Riverfront will officially open its doors at 10 p.m. for midnight showings of “The Hobbit” in its IMAX theater, one of the few screens in the country equipped with the latest HFR (high frame rate) technology. Also showing at midnight on other screens: “Hitchcock,” “Skyfall” and “Life of Pi.”

Penn Cinema operates a similar theater near Lancaster, Pa. The Wilmington theater was built in partnership with Buccini/Pollin Group.
