JETBLUE AIRWAYS NEW LOGOJet Blue Airways is taking on US Airways on a high-priced route between Philadelphia and Boston.

The carrier will launch five daily flights from Philadelphia to Logan Airport beginning on May 23. Introductory fares will be as low as $17.76 one way. Last-minute flights on US Airways can run $600 from Philadelphia to Boston.

Southwest Airlines earlier dropped all service between Philadelphia and Boston-area airport as fuel prices rose and the carrier integrated its system with Airtran. Fares soared since that time.

Philadelphia International Airport CEO Mark Gale added: “JetBlue offers an exciting, customer-friendly experience to air travelers, and we are confident that the traveling public in the Philadelphia region will enthusiastically embrace JetBlue’s excellent service to Boston. This is yet another great option in low-cost airlines at PHL, helping to stimulate competition and promote lower fares.”

JetBlue has added an average of five new destinations per year from Boston focus since service first launched in 2004. The airline is betting that some travelers will connect to long-distance destinations from Boston.
