Shake-up under way in county government; interim police chief named

The News Journal is reporting that a shake-up is under way in New Castle County as County Executive Tom Gordon takes charge.

The  Middletown Transcript reported that Captain Elmer Setting was named acting chief by Gordon, following sudden resignation last week of   Chief of Police Scott McLaren.

Gordon, a former County Police Chief and two-term county executive had questioned the strategy of the department during his election campaign.

Also let go  were County Solicitor Wendy Danner and Land Use Attorney James Edward, according to the News Journal  Gordon took over as County Executive on Nov. 13th.

Gordon, a  Democrat,  beat out Paul Clark, who served in the post after County Executive Chris Coons was elected to the U.S. Senate.

The business community has been concerned about Gordon, whose previous administration passed the Unified Development Code. The code aimed to managed sprawl, but  according to critics simply extended the sprawl to Middletown,  Smyrna and other areas.

Gordon had expressed unhappiness  with approval of zoning for the former DuPont Brandywine site by the County Council. Developer Stoltz plans to put a mixed use retail and residential area at the site. Opponents said the project would result in addj
