David Kappos, who also serves as under secretary of commerce for intellectual property, will attend the Oct. 11, 2012 event at the DuPont Country Club near Wilmington. The seminar explores intellectual property issues and is widely known for featuring some of the nation’s premier authorities on the topic. More than 200 attorneys and legal professionals attended the 2011 event.
Kappos advises President Obama, the secretary of commerce and the administration on intellectual property matters. Prior to joining the administration, Kappos was vice president and assistant general counsel for intellectual property at IBM, where he managed worldwide intellectual property operations. He began his career with the company as an engineer.
He is widely credited with making changes at the Patent and Trademark Office to improve efficiency and speed the patent review process, all with an eye for supporting American business. He has said he views the Patent and Trademark Office as an important component to the country’s economic development. The office issues trademarks, patents and copyrights on inventions. Kappos has also worked to be accessible through social media. He publishes a blog called “Director’s Forum,” hosted through the office’s website.
Kappos holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California Davis and a law degree from the University of California Berkeley.
He will be the October event’s first speaker, beginning at 8 a.m. The seminar runs through 5 p.m. and is followed by a DuPont executive legal leadership reception.
