The Delaware River and Bay Authority is seeking naval architect services regarding the possible replacement of car ferries. Bids on the consulting services are due on Oct. 4.

The five vessels of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry system connects Cape May, N.J. with the  Lewes, Del. The ferries transport passengers and vehicles 17 miles across the Delaware Bay.

The authority has been working to cut costs of the ferry service, which has been hit by a sluggish economy, higher fuel prices and other costs.

The authority also operates the Delaware Memorial Bridge, a ferry between Delaware City and Fort Delaware and airports in New Jersey and Delaware.
