Quick take – The Dog House

We were driving down Route 40 in Glasgow, Del. and wondering catching a bite. “What about the Dog House, ?” my spouse asked.

We headed up 896, I-95 and 141, landing on a stool at the Delaware landmark on DuPont Highway, New Castle. Chances are, you have been to the Dog House at one time or another, if you lived in New Castle, Bear- Glasgow or Milltown for that matter.

One fan is local restauranteur Xavier Teixido (Harry’s Savoy, Harry’s Seafood and Kid Shelleen’s) who, a while back, stopped by and praised the establishment on his Facebook page. He received a couple of dozen responses.

Thanks for the Facebook reminder. It is easy to get busy and forget about the Dog House. That’s a shame. If they ever have national park in Delaware, there should be a replica of the Dog House.

For about $3.40, you get a large chili dog. Add in a plain dog, an order of fries and a couple of Cokes and the bill will set you back about $12. You also get the privilege of watching the skilled crew behind the counter work a hot dog assembly line at peak periods.

They still have the time to say hello and let you know one of the stools at the counter is available.

Also worth trying are the fresh turkey sandwiches, cheesesteaks and the pizza from the  carryout counter in the back. The turkey sub is probably the least expensive. Ask for a little extra oil an mayo. While the turkey is moist, you get so much on the sandwich, it needs a little something extra.

But the hotdog on an Italian-style bun is still the star.

Stop by and bring cash. The Dog House doesn’t take credit cards, although you can tap the ATM inside.
