'Distraction burglary' reported by homeowners

Newark Police are warning police about “distraction burglaries” involving a pitch for landscaping work.

On Sep. 18th , a homeowner, 82, on the 100 block of Panorma Drive, received a knock at the door from an individual claiming to be a landscaping contractor  who  who said he was doing work for his neighbor at the rear of his property.

The suspect asked the man to accompany him to the backyard.

Two other individuals then entered the home through the front door, where they were met by the  female homeowner. She was told to go to the backyard. One suspect remained at the porch of the home and while the couple was outside,  a  man entered the house and took cash.

The owners later discovered the burglary had taken place  after they had talked with the men about the proposed work.

The three suspects are described as olive-skin males, speaking with an unknown accident. One was 50 to 55 years old, with the other two 30-35 and 20-25 years of age respectively. The suspects arrived in a black Chevrolet Tahoe with tinted windows.

Newark Police reminded residents that all persons doing work in Newark are required to present their permit upon request. If the permit is not produced, police should be called.
