On Saturday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. the 6th annual Main Street Mile will host hundreds of runners and walkers as they take advantage of the rare opportunity to travel down the center of Main Street without cars and traffic. The event  supports  the Newark Police K-9 Unit and the Downtown Newark Partnership.

This annual fundraiser has become an important source of funding for the Newark Police K-9 Unit as the cost of purchasing a K-9 officer along with the cost of training, food, and incidentals can total thousands of dollars. Newark’s first K-9, Paco, was retired last September due to Bi-lateral Hip Dysplasia and funds raised from the Main Street Mile helped purchase, train and set up a kennel for Paco’s replacement.

The initial cost of a K-9 is approximately $10,000 with an additional one-time cost of about $1,000 for kennel set-up at the handler’s home. Other incidentals total approximately $1,500 a year. Veterinary care is donated by a local veterinarian.

The race begins at the McDonald’s traffic circle on Main Street  and finishes minutes later at the Deer Park Tavern. Immediately following, runners and walkers are treated to a brunch hosted by the Deer Park Tavern at 108 West Main Street.

The Main Street Mile is sponsored by the Downtown Newark Partnership, Newark Police Department, Fusion Fitness Center, Rittenhouse Station, Deer Park Tavern, and New Balance.
